
A spiral wound membrane changeout is more than simply replacing membrane elements. It is one of the best opportunities to inspect, replace, and standardise the critical accessory components that directly affect plant reliability, hygiene, and filtration performance.
Small components inside a membrane housing can have a major influence on product recovery, CIP effectiveness, and membrane life. Re-using worn or damaged accessories may create hidden issues that only become visible after restart, through protein leakage, unstable performance, or premature membrane damage.
Planning ahead is critical. All replacement components and consumables should be confirmed on-site before shutdown begins to avoid unnecessary delays during installation.
Lip seals are a consumable item and should typically be replaced during every membrane changeout. Correct elastomer selection matters:
Lip seals maintain separation between permeate and retentate streams. Damaged, flattened, or chemically degraded seals can result in leakage, reduced product recovery, and inconsistent plant performance.
ATDs - also referred to as interconnectors or seal carriers - should be carefully inspected during every changeout. Replace any ATD showing cracking, distortion, wear around sealing faces, chipped edges, or mechanical damage from removal tooling.
Polysulfone ATDs can be damaged through incorrect handling or uneven installation force. SMS recommends holding spare polysulfone ATDs on-site, typically around 1-2% of total installed quantity.
Stainless steel ATDs are commonly used at vessel permeate outlet positions due to their higher strength and durability. Because these often have longer manufacturing lead times, replacement quantities should be reviewed well before shutdown planning begins.
Blank End Plugs are often overlooked because they remain hidden at the feed end of the vessel. However, damaged or worn BEPs can compromise permeate tube sealing from feed flow. Inspect during every membrane replacement and replace any units showing deformation, cracking, seal wear, or chemical degradation.
Permeate hoses should be inspected for pressure deformation, hardening, cracks, fatigue, or reduced flexibility. Because hoses are regularly disconnected during membrane replacement, shutdowns provide the ideal opportunity to replace ageing hoses and hygienic sample point components.
