Start by engaging early with your chemical supplier and service teams to plan your shutdown work effectively and reduce the risk of damage during maintenance and restart.

Tip #1: Membrane Preservation

Membrane preservation remains critical during any shutdown period. Preservative plays two essential roles:

  • Prevents bacterial growth when CIP (Clean-in-Place) isn’t possible
  • Keeps membranes wet, preventing drying, which can lead to loss of flux (permeate transfer) performance

Top up preservative:
Ensure levels are at the higher end of the recommended concentration before shutdown or service work. For specific chemical requirements, consult your chemical supplier.

Circulate thoroughly:
Run all pumps to fully wet the membranes and distribute preservative evenly across the system.

Blank off smartly:
Work with your services team to remove and blank pipework in a way that minimises fluid loss, such as isolating at RJT or Tri-Clover unions.

Plan ahead:
Schedule maintenance early and execute efficiently to minimise downtime and exposure.

Reinstate with care:
Before bringing the plant back online, ensure preservative levels and soft water are correctly reinstated.

Tip #2: Membrane Accessories

Plan well in advance for membrane installation and ensure all consumables are available on-site before shutdown begins.

These typically include:

Lip Seals:
Replace with Viton (UF) or EPDM (RO/NF) when membranes are changed out.

ATDs (Stainless Steel and Polysulfone):
Replace if any damage occurs during changeout. It’s good practice to hold spare Polysulfone ATDs (typically 1–2% of installed quantity), as damage can occur from incorrect tooling, handling, or uneven force. Stainless Steel ATDs should be planned early due to longer lead times.

Permeate Hoses:
Replace any showing wear, deformation, or signs of pressure damage.
Also check and replace hygienic sample point EPDM grommets where used.
