In dairy and food processing, hygienic design is not simply a compliance requirement. It directly impacts product quality, cleaning effectiveness, plant reliability, and audit performance.

Membrane systems, pipework, fittings, seals, and accessories all play a critical role in maintaining hygienic performance within a processing environment.

At Smart Membrane Solutions, hygienic design principles are incorporated into every stage of membrane plant fabrication and system design to ensure equipment is safe, cleanable, durable, and suitable for demanding dairy processing environments.

Built Around Hygienic Design Standards

All membrane systems are designed in accordance with recognised hygienic engineering principles, including 3-A Sanitary Standards and EHEDG guidelines.

These standards influence everything from material selection and weld quality through to pipework layout, drainability, and cleanability. The goal is to eliminate areas where product residue, bacteria, or biofilm can accumulate and compromise product integrity.

Key hygienic design considerations include:

  • Smooth, non-porous, cleanable surfaces
  • Fully drainable pipework and equipment.
  • Minimal dead legs (≤1.5x pipe diameter)
  • Full penetration hygienic butt welds
  • Surface finishes polished to dairy processing requirements
  • System design and layouts optimised for effective CIP performance

By incorporating these principles early in the design process, membrane systems become easier to clean, simpler to maintain, and more reliable over time.

Food-Grade Materials Matter

Material selection plays a critical role in both hygienic performance and long-term system reliability.

Wetted components are typically manufactured using AISI 304 stainless steel as a minimum, with AISI 316L preferred in more demanding processing environments due to its superior corrosion resistance and durability.

Where polymers and elastomers are required, only FDA and EU food-contact compliant materials are used, including PTFE, EPDM, and silicone grades suited to dairy applications.

Materials that may introduce contamination risk or compromise food safety, including brass and copper in product-contact areas, are excluded from hygienic process systems.

Designed for CIP and Long-Term Cleaning Performance

Effective cleaning is fundamental to membrane plant performance.

Gaskets, seals, and membrane accessories are selected specifically for compatibility with repeated cleaning cycles, chemical exposure, and thermal stress. This helps maintain sealing integrity and hygienic performance over the life of the system.

A well-designed membrane plant should not only process efficiently during production but also clean consistently and reliably between production runs.

Traceability and Audit Readiness

Modern dairy processing environments require full transparency around materials, fabrication, and compliance.

To support this, Smart Membrane Solutions provides full documentation and traceability across membrane systems and components, including:

  • Material certificates
  • Food-grade compliance documentation
  • Weld and surface finish records
  • Supplier traceability
  • Quality inspection records

Components are handled, packaged, and transported using processes designed to minimise contamination risk prior to installation.

Trusted Membrane Supply Partners

As both a membrane system manufacturer and membrane supplier, Smart Membrane Solutions partners with globally recognised membrane manufacturers with proven performance in dairy and food processing applications.

All supplied membrane elements are manufactured using FDA-approved food-contact materials and meet relevant international compliance requirements, helping ensure consistent product quality, filtration performance, and operational reliability.

Locally Manufactured Components Built to Global Standards

In addition to complete membrane systems, Smart Membrane Solutions also manufactures a range of membrane components and accessories locally in New Zealand.

These products are produced using the same hygienic fabrication standards and certified food-grade materials expected within international dairy processing environments.
