Membranes are an expensive and most sensitive component in your plant, that you want to be running optimally. What reaches them matters just as much as how they're cleaned. Particles, fibres, and suspended solids in the feed stream don't just add to the fouling load your CIP programme has to deal with, they can also cause physical damage to the membrane surface that no amount of cleaning will reverse.

Getting the pre-filtration stage right, upstream of the membrane, is one of the simplest ways to protect your investment and get more consistent performance over their life.

What Happens When Pre-Filtration Is Undersized

When bag, cartridge or strainer filtration ahead of the membrane plant is missing, undersized, or fitted with the wrong retention rating, larger particles and fibres pass straight through to the membrane surface. This accelerates fouling, increases the frequency and intensity of CIP required to recover flux, and in some cases can score or damage the membrane surface directly. The result is higher operating pressures, more downtime for cleaning, and a shorter working life for a component that is expensive to replace.

Matching the Filter Media to the Risk

Not every feed stream carries the same risk. A product with high suspended solids or variable particle size needs a different retention rating and dirt-holding capacity compared to a cleaner feed with occasional fibre contamination. This is where the choice between a bag or cartridge filter makes a real difference. Filter bags are an economical choice for a wide range of filtration applications, while filter cartridges are the logical choice for those specialist industries requiring a sub-micron retention rating.

Where Eaton Filtration Fits In

SMS is the exclusive Eaton industrial filtration distributor in New Zealand, supplying a broad range of Eaton filter bags, cartridges, and housings that sit ahead of your membrane system. Because we work across both the pre-filtration and the membrane side of the plant, we can specify the correct pre-filtration solution with your specific membrane configuration in mind, rather than treating it as a separate, unrelated purchase.

Protecting the Investment

Pre-filtration doesn't replace a well-run CIP programme, rather the two work together, complimenting one another. Effective upstream filtration reduces the fouling load your cleaning cycle has to deal with, which means shorter or less frequent CIP runs, better flux recovery, and a membrane that reaches the end of its expected service life rather than falling short of it.
